Artistic Director Jean Isaacs chooses the theme Janus after the Roman god who looks both forward and backward. This concert honors the director's past and provides a platform for the choreographers of the future. Jean Isaacs will present her critically acclaimed "Rite of Spring," created in 2002 to Stravinsky's ground-breaking score.Performed by 12 of the region's most compelling dancers, this "Rite of Spring" takes place in a rave. The virgin sacrificed to ensure fertility is dancer Trystan Loucado.
Reminiscent of Janus I from January 2017, Isaacs will premiere five more dances inspired by photos from her family's photo albums. Entitled "Songs from the Family Album" this new collection includes a 1952 photo of her grandparents Francesco and Virginia Baldini with their 14 grandchildren, a photo of her sleeping with newborn Emmi, six-year-old Liv with her Cabbage Patch doll, a shot of Dora Branchini (Isaacs' godmother) on her 90th birthday, a recent photo of Isaacs and her spouse Steve Baker, and the original duet created for, and called, "Janus" as danced by Desiree Cuizon Fejeran and Minaqua McPherson to Dvorak's "Piano Trio #4."These deeply personal photos and the dances inspired by them are building for Isaacs a kind of memory album, which, when completed, will combine for a full evening-length work touching on her early history and current interests and challenges.
Highly anticipated are two new world premieres commissioned by the San Diego Dance Theater from Gina and Kyle Sorensen and Trystan Loucado. Last year's "Janus" featured the company in Sorensen's "Nine Tall, One Underground," a smash hit with audiences. The duo has cast six dancers for this year's piece.Long-time company member and emerging choreographer Trystan Loucado has chosen 4 dancers for his new piece. Set to "Black Earth" by Fazil Say, the quartet explores cyclical relationships and small group personal interactions.
"Janus" is a highlight of our year, giving the dancers a chance to thrive in a theater setting. "The Saville Theatre is a little gem and a perfect venue to support Janus," says Isaacs. "In addition, it boasts one of the city's finest resident lighting designers in Robert Norberg, and we are thrilled to be back."
